Mitral Valve Disease (MVD) is prevalent in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (CKCS) breed. While any dog breed can develop MVD, statistics have shown that MVD is 20 times more likely to strike the CKCS breed. Additionally, the onset of MVD is much earlier in Cavaliers than in other breeds. Most Cavaliers will develop a murmur by the age of 10 years, and many develop them much younger.
MVD accounts for approximately 50% of Cavalier deaths. Always ensure that both parents have current clear cardiac OFA testing before buying a puppy! There is no guarantee that a puppy will not develop MVD just because the parents have clear cardiac testing, but it significantly reduces the risk.
